In the very closest of contests, the Hyundai I-20a emerged victorious as Car of the Year 2009 with Tata Indica Vista being a close second.. The Maruti Suzuki A-star  taking third place.

In the very closest of contests, the Hyundai I-20a emerged victorious as Car of the Year 2009 with Tata Indica Vista being a close second.. The Maruti Suzuki A-star  taking third place.

 The voting for the “CAR OF THE YEAR 2009” is purely done on the basis of new Entrants i.e. those cars launched during the year 2008-09 are only considered. No upgrades, facelifts of the cars which have been launched during the current year or the preceding years are considered for the COTY-09. This leaves us with just A-star and the Hyundai  I-20 .

Yes, its the small but premium small car that has won our Car Of The Year award this time around. Likely to be launched this January 2009, it surely deserves the “Car of the Year 2009” as  it has passed with tremendous accolades from our team. The survey  was done in such a way that cars that are affordable to buy and run only were considered  over other cars. 

Seven finalists shortlisted from all the small cars launched in the calendar year 2008 such as . Maruti Suzuki -Star, Hyundai I-10 and I-20, Maruti Suzuki Swift, Chevrolet Aveo U-VA, Fiat 500, Skoda Fabia… all are were present, but none came too close to the coveted crown. 

Cars that are truly made in India, built and exported from India were the top most gainers in our voting banks,  and ones whose design, performance, comfort and safety was what which mattered to all of us featured in the final contenders’ list. 

 The Contenders

SKODA FABIA, SUZUKI A-sTAR, HYUNDAI I-10, CHEVROLET AVEO-UVA, TATA INDICA VISTA.

The Skoda Fabia is arguably the best car in the premium hatchback scenario, thet brilliant ride quality, superb ergonimics, quality and plush interiors  and refinement levels akin to that of far more expensive sedan. the drawback being the  price.

The Indica Vista is a very good car . The Fiat derived multijet motor is ultimately the one which is being shared by the Maruti Swift Diesel. The names being different. Multijet in Maruti Swift Diesel and Quadrajet in Tata Indica Vista which produces the same output of 76 PS. The build quality has improved vastly. TATA never had an issue with ride quality, and the VISTA handles well too at higher speeds and above all is economical to run..

Hyundai is launching the i20 in the last week of December or early January 2009.The  Kappa 102 litre engine is shared with the I-10 to make slightly higher power output with 87 ps of power and  is quite energetic and well placed. the plus point being the  dynamics of the new car. It certainly is a pleasure to drive, economical and pretty stylish to look at too.

The TATA Indica Vista  is indeed a new and facelifted version of the old Indica with a new quadrajet Engine.  The new Indica Vista  is indeed a new benchmark when it comes to design, packaging and performance. It is affordable, economical and safe. Despite the small engine size, the Indica Vista is fun to run. The first runner-up slot going to the TATA INDICA VISTA.

That, ladies and gentlemen, gets us to this year’s winner. The new Hyundai I-20 which looks stunningly good, is brilliantly packaged and has one of the refined and trend smart KAPPA engine with 1.2 litre   meant for a car in its class powering it. to dethrone the Suzuki Swift after launch and the reliability  and refinement of the car is to be considered as a plus point.

The new Hyundai I-20  can return 11 kpl even in traffic and deliver decent 150 kph plus performance when you demand it. The Hyundai I-10 has raised the bar and its older sibling the I-20 is a new face amongst the crowd and deserves to be an OVERALL WINNER .Congratulations, Hyundai for yet another spectacular product, the I-20
